Bridge Academy

Psalm 32:8

1st & 2nd grade History through Literature

Teacher: Ashley Knickerbocker (Ashley@knickerbockerfitness.com)

Description: Using Susan Wise Bauer’s engaging narrative, The Story of the World Vol 1.: Ancient Times, this class will lead students on a fascinating adventure through Ancient Times from 5000 BC – 400 AD. We will learn how to be historians and archeologists, discovering creation and the first civilizations, exploring the pyramids of Egypt, deciphering hieroglyphics and the ancient writings of Hammurabi’s code in Babylon, understanding the Exodus and God’s plan for the Hebrew people, and experiencing the ancient cultures of China, Africa, Greece and Rome. This text is designed as a read aloud for parents and students to enjoy together. Students will read weekly selections with parents at home and complete assignments from the SOTW activity guide, as well as additional assignments geared toward a 1st-2nd grade level in order to prepare for class discussions, activities, and presentations. Additionally, various literature selections relating to this period of history will be used to introduce and reinforce 1st-2nd grade language arts skills such as predicting, retelling and evaluating a story; learning new vocabulary and literary styles; and practicing grammar and writing concepts through literature-based assignments.
