American Literature with Composition

Description: Serving as the second step of a college prep English track, this course is an overview of some of the great works in American Literature. Students will be studying a variety of genres including poems, short fiction and novels. Academic writing will focus specifically on literary devices taken from the reading assignments. 

The Call of the Wild
The Scarlet Letter
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 
The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe

Pre-Requisites: Because we want our students to have an experience that allows for their writing skills to be taken to the next level, a writing sample is required for placement into any high school level English course. If you are interested in your student enrolling in this course and your student is currently enrolled at Bridge Academy, they may see Alicia Collins to complete and submit their writing sample during Bridge Academy regular hours at their convenience. If you wish your student to take this course but they are not enrolled at Bridge Academy, please contact Alicia Collins at to set up an appointment to have your student complete and submit their writing sample. 

Copy/Supply fee: $35.00 (check written Ashley Wilda due at Orientation or by 9/1/2020)

Annual tuition: $410.00 ($41.00/month for 10 months, August – May or $45.56/month if prorated)

Ashley Wilda

B.A. in English / MFA in Creative Writing

Ashley Wilda is a writer, teacher, and artist living in Richmond, VA. Having attended the University of Richmond and the Vermont College of Fine Arts, she holds a BA in English and an MFA in creative writing for children and young adults. She currently teaches writing at John Tyler Community College and is represented by Liz Nealon for her poetry and fiction. A former homeschooled child, she understands the unique needs and blessings of Richmond’s alternative schooling community.
