Culinary Arts
Description: This middle school class will introduce your student to the
joys of cooking in a fun and lively setting. We will study basic nutrition as
it relates to food and the proper handling of food. Your student will learn how
to use a chef’s knife plus learn about other types of knives used in the
kitchen. Topics to be studied but not limited to are as follows: learning about
different grains, making homemade bread and how yeast works, learning how to
make a broth for soups, and cutting fruit for decoration. During Christmas, we will prepare Christmas
candy and cookies for our local police and fire departments. My hope is to
continue this project each year so students will learn the importance of
volunteering their time and reaching out to others through cooking/baking.
Throughout the year, we will watch two to three videos from The Great Courses,
titled, Everyday Gourmet: Making Healthy Food Taste Great. These videos are a great way to learn about
different aspects of cooking healthy and to incorporate all food groups within
in your meals.
This class is for middle school students who are able to handle a little more down time than a normal class. If your student is unable to exercise this type of control, please consider waiting another year to enroll in this class.
