Course Description: In Digital Design, 9th - 12th grade students will utilize the principles of design and their drawing skills to create digital graphics. Projects will begin on paper, as students refine their designs for their digital projects. Next, students will work through fundamental exercises to learn how to convert their design to a vector image. Additional assignments intend to allow students creative expression. New topics will include digital graphic uses, vector drawing shortcuts, vector build methods, design decisions for print and digital mediums, and use of mobile apps. Students will work on their digital image projects at home before uploading their finished work to Engrade for review the following week. Class time will consist of discussion, lecture, demonstration, troubleshooting, and critique. Projects will be demonstrated in Adobe Illustrator and the Adobe Capture app. Adobe’s creative cloud subscription offers a student discount plus many additional features such as mobile editing. However, software is a tool. Any vector program can be used to accomplish the assignments. A suitable free application is Inkscape.
Parents are responsible for ensuring their computer meets the minimum requirements to run the digital software and/or apps.
Prerequisite: To be successful in this class students need a foundation in design fundamentals and core drawing skills. Therefore, preference will be given to students who have successfully completed Mrs. McAleenan’s Graphic Design or Drawing classes. Other students wishing to enroll in this class should contact Mrs. McAleenan to discuss previous experience and guidelines for submitting a work sample.
