Drama: Dramatic & Humorous Interpretation (HI)
This forensics drama class will focus on DI and HI that can be performed at competitions throughout Virginia through the NCFCA Christian Speech and Debate. This is not a requirement of the class, but I will be teaching the standards laid out in the National Forensics League, so if students wish to compete, they have this option. Performing at Forensic events is well received when colleges are looking at potential applicants. The class will be using plays, short stories and other published works. Students will perform a selection of one or more portions of a piece up to 10 minutes in length. With a spotlight on character development and depth, DI and HI focus on the student's ability to convey emotion through the use of a text. Competitors may portray one or multiple characters. No props or costumes are used. For competition, students can either choose to perform solo, or they may choose a partner and do duo events. For more information about events that are available, please go to NCFCA Christian Speech and Debate. The portions dealing with DI and HI would be under the speech portion. Class limit is 20.

ABOUT THE TEACHER
Laura Burke
B.A in Communications & Missions
Laura has a background in cross-cultural ministry- working in the inner cities of East St. Louis, and Chicago, as well as most recently leading a non-profit ministry on the Route One corridor with mostly Spanish-speaking families. She has a B.A. in Communications and Missions from Evangel University, and competed on the University’s Forensics team. While enjoying the various speech categories, Laura fell in love with Readers Theater, Children’s storytelling, and Dramatic Interpretation of Poetry and Prose. These days, Laura’s focus is on homeschooling her 2 amazing kids, volunteering in many different areas of her church, walking her obnoxious Labrador Retriever, and searching out delicious ethnic restaurants for date nights with her husband, Jeff.
