English 1
First graders will build strong foundational reading and writing skills in a structured, encouraging classroom environment. Students will strengthen phonics and decoding skills, develop reading fluency and comprehension, and grow in confidence as independent readers. The course introduces and reinforces essential grammar concepts such as sentence structure, subjects and predicates, nouns, verbs, and pronouns, while also providing practice in beginning composition. Students will be expected to complete assigned lessons from their worktext each week to reinforce concepts taught in class and ensure steady progress through the curriculum. Through direct instruction, guided practice, interactive activities, and meaningful review, students will develop strong communication habits and a solid foundation for long-term academic success.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Laura Portz
M.Ed. in Reading
Laura earned her undergrad degree in education and German from the University of Richmond and taught high school German in the public school system. During that time, she also completed her Master’s degree in Education as a Reading Specialist at VCU and gained experience working as a reading tutor, supporting students with a wide range of learning needs. Laura has homeschooled her two children since kindergarten, and as a family they love to travel, explore the outdoors, and learn together beyond the classroom. She is grateful for the opportunity to teach at Bridge and to partner with families in nurturing a love of learning.
