English 5

This class will focus on writing, grammar, and literature. Using IEW’s Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales Writing Lessons, students will learn how to effectively use a wide range of structural models and stylistic techniques in their compositions as they write on a variety of fiction and non-fiction topics. All aspects of grammar will be taught through the use of Growing with Grammar Level 5. Additionally students will cultivate an appreciation of literature and build reading comprehension and critical thinking skills as they engage in reading selections from BJU's Reading 5 text, Quests.

IEW’s Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales Writing Lessons
Growing with Grammar Level 5, Student Manual AND Student Workbook
BJU Reading 5 Quests Student Text and Student Activities Manual


Copy/Supply Fee: $30 (paid directly to the coordinating instructor, Emerald Soldan OR Stephanie York, at Orientation or the first class attended)


Tuition: $360 ($36.00/month for 10 months, August - May or $40.00/month if prorated or on a 9 month payment plan)

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Emerald Soldan & Stephanie York

B.A. English
M.A. Teaching
Emerald grew up in a small town on the peninsula of Virginia. She attended a private Christian school k-12th grade and went on to Christopher Newport University where she earned both a degree in English and in Teaching. Her marriage to her husband brought her to Richmond where her family has grown. She is the mom of two blessing from God, one of which will be joining her at the Bridge. She has always had a love of helping others learn and always knew she would be an educator in some capacity. Emerald taught Kindergarten and Second grade at Banner Christian before her first blessing arrived; she then volunteered and eventually became staff at her church in the following years. She has been a homeschool mom for 2 years and thoroughly enjoys the homeschool life. Her biggest passion is for families who welcome kids in their home and children who are adopted or in foster care. Emerald and her family are very excited to join the Bridge Academy.

B.S. in Psychology and Masters in Education
Stephanie was born and raised in Chesterfield County, Va. She attended VCU and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Education. Upon graduating she began teaching elementary school in Chesterfield County. Several years later, she and her husband, Chris, were blessed with their first son and Stephanie left the teaching profession to stay at home. She later returned to work at her church as director of the preschool and daycare where she implemented a private Kindergarten program. As their family grew, Stephanie eventually felt led to homeschool her three boys and has been doing so for the past 11 years. Two of her boys have graduated; one is now working fulltime and the other attends Liberty University and is a member of the LU Archery Team. Her youngest is quickly approaching graduation and has plans to attend college as well. During her years of homeschooling, Stephanie has taught numerous homeschooling classes ranging from elementary age to high school at various co-ops. During the summer months you can find her poolside coaching for a local swim team or cheering on her youngest who has been involved in the sport year round for many years. She is also very active within her church and serves in leadership as the Children’s Church Director and assists with the Women’s Ministry.
